This unique “structural rammed earth” home was built in 2015 near Palmer by the Aleutian Housing Authority in collaboration with West Virginia University. It features two foot thick walls that are alternating layers of 8″ earth, 8″ foam, then 8″ more earth and has sensors installed that have tracked moisture, humidity and temperature. It has been lived in for the past few years. On Nov. 11, we’ll discuss materials, insulation and structural components in a seismically active area (including the 7.1 earthquake in Nov. 2018).On Nov. 18, we will look at performance and cost, with the home using about half the energy of a typical home in the area. Presenters include researchers and builders form West Virginia University and the Aleutian Housing Authority.
