PRESENTERS

Richard Proven & Donald Proven, Sun Certified Builders  • Manitoba, Canada Alaska

Sun Certified Builders Cooperative Limited formed its worker cooperative in 2012, with the goal of constructing high performance buildings. Members of Sun Certified carry a number of certifications: Red Seal Carpenter, Passive House Tradesperson, Passive House Consultant and Mechanical Technologist.

The company’s first retrofit and use of Larsen Trusses goes back to the late 1980’s. In the late 90’s they began experimenting with modified Larsen trusses and have now perfected both the new build and retrofit design and methodology. Sun Certified has worked on several high efficiency home projects and was the design consultant on the first certified Passive House in Manitoba. It is currently working to advance another step by building a second story addition using factory built wall panels to increase the quality of build and efficiency. Find out more about Sun Certified building techniques in this CBC video and Climate Change Connection video on a Passive House retrofit and on their website.

Donald Proven is a 3rd generation builder following in the footsteps of his grandfather who was a journey carpenter and cabinet maker. He is a certified Passive House Trades person and Passive House Consultant. Donald lives in a first generation energy retrofit home, built in 1956 and retrofitted in 2011.

Richard (Rick) Proven is a jack of all trades. He worked for 32 years for Parks Canada, in Canada’s National Parks service. Along the way he became a mediator, facilitator and adult educator. Rick built his first house in 1978 and currently lives in a century farm house that was retrofitted with Larson Trusses in 1993.
